Harley-Davidson is bringing back the true Sportster: The air-cooled 883 is set to make its big comeback in 2027
It’s the news countless Harley fans have been waiting for for years: Harley-Davidson is officially working on bringing back the classic Sportster. Not as a modern Revolution Max bike with liquid cooling and a high-tech approach—but apparently as a genuine, air-cooled Evo Sportster once again. And for many, that could be the most exciting Harley news since the end of the Iron 883.
As part of its new corporate strategy, “Back to the Bricks,” Harley-Davidson has announced that it will once again focus more strongly on traditional values, more affordable motorcycles, and its own brand DNA. The strategy was officially released via Harley-Davidson Investor Relations and is intended to bring the company back to greater growth and closer to its core target audience.

The Return of the Evo Sportster
Several international motorcycle media outlets are now reporting in unison that Harley-Davidson is working on a new air-cooled Sportster 883 for the 2027 model year. According to the reports, the information comes from investor briefings, strategy presentations, and statements by CEO Artie Starrs.
This would mean Harley is bringing back exactly what many riders have missed since the end of the Iron 883: an authentic, compact motorcycle with classic V-twin character, simple technology, and huge customization potential.
Particularly interesting: According to the information available so far, an air-cooled Evolution engine is actually set to be used again—precisely the type of engine that has defined the Sportster for decades.

Harley responds to the criticism it has faced in recent years
With the switch to the Revolution Max platform, Harley-Davidson aimed to become more modern, sportier, and more international. Models like the Sportster S or Nightster were intended to appeal to new target groups—but at the same time, the very bike that had started it all for many people disappeared from the lineup.
Dealers and longtime Harley fans, in particular, criticized the sudden lack of an affordable entry-level model. For decades, the classic Sportster was not just a Harley, but for many, the gateway to the entire scene.
According to several reports, CEO Artie Starrs is said to have made it clear in investor meetings that demand for a classic Sportster remains extremely high. The often-quoted statement:
“Our riders want it, which means our dealers want it.”

An affordable Harley instead of a premium-only model?
One particularly exciting aspect is the targeted price. Industry media are currently reporting an entry-level price of around $10,000. This would bring Harley-Davidson significantly closer to younger riders, beginners, and customizers once again.
That seems to be exactly part of the new strategy. Harley apparently no longer wants to rely exclusively on expensive touring models and luxury bikes in the future, but rather to once again offer motorcycles that can be modified, customized, and actually used as a foundation for one’s own scene.
And that’s exactly what the old Sportster was always perfect for.

The big question: How does Harley plan to meet Euro 5+ standards?
As great as the excitement over the potential comeback may be, one crucial question remains unanswered: How does Harley-Davidson plan to get a classic air-cooled Evo engine to meet modern Euro 5+ emissions standards?
So far, there has been no official technical information on this. The motorcycle community is already speculating about new fuel injection systems, ride-by-wire, larger catalytic converters, or internal engine modifications. It’s also possible that certain versions will be intended only for select markets.
The fact is: This very point is likely to determine just how closely the new Sportster actually stays true to its legendary predecessor.

Of immense importance to the custom scene
If Harley-Davidson really does bring back the Evo Sportster, it would not only delight fans but also revitalize the entire custom scene. For decades, the Sportster served as the basis for countless custom builds.
Hardly any other Harley model was so easy to customize and, at the same time, so closely tied to the scene. That is precisely why the return of the classic Sportster could also be extremely exciting for accessory manufacturers and customizers.
And Harley likely knows exactly that. According to the official “Back to the Bricks” strategy, the Parts & Accessories business is also set to become significantly more important again in the future.

Not everything has been officially confirmed yet
Despite the many consistent reports, there are currently no concrete technical specifications, final model names, or official press photos available.
It is also not yet confirmed whether the new Sportster will indeed return as the “Iron 883.”
But one thing seems pretty clear by now: Harley-Davidson has understood how important the classic Sportster was for the brand, the dealers, and above all for the community.
And that is exactly why 2027 could be a pretty special year for many Harley fans.
