STURGIS - Tips for your visit!
What‘s happening at the biggest event in US motorcycle calendar?
Anyone who has ever been to Sturgis – and „Sturgis“ has since long included an area that stretches from the badlands of South Dakota through the entire Black Hills to „Devils Tower“ in neighboring Wyoming – will want to visit it again – and again. „Freedom“ is more than a word here – despite all the restrictions on speed and drinking in public – the landscapes are so vast and so beautiful that you want to experience them over and over again.
Sturgis Mainstreet, as seen from one of the two towers that mark the core part of Sturgis Mainstreet.
Few places in America offer such a variety of landscapes in such a „small“ area. Sturgis is always a constant factor and ceremony, yet also in constant change: Since the first visit oft he author in 1998, many new locations and attractions have opened, blossomed, gone under, burned down or gone bankrupt – as a small reflection of America, one can experience here – sharply focused as in a magnifying glass – the American „pioneer spirit“. Concentrated in just under 10 rally days, there is so much to see and experience that you can never see it all. Here are just a few ideas what to see.
The „Mecca of Motorcycles“ has become a must-see motorcycle event for every Harley-Davidson and Indian Rider. For the last 30 years, Mainstreet parking has expanded many blocks wider that the mainstreet stretch between the two towers – but they remain the heart and soul of the Sturgis Rally.
STURGIS PREVIEW
From the Badlands of South Dakota to Devils Tower in Wyoming: Motorcycles rule the roads!
View onto Sturgis from the air. The City park in front has been one of the campgrounds in the Eighties.
Lazelle Street is the main road passing through Sturgis – and the J&P Cycles Shops, vendor displays and some of the main industry activities.
Stretching out over more that 150 Miles from the scenic Badlands of South Dakota to Hulett in Wyoming, the Sturgis Rally has become THE main motorcycle event in the USA with literally hundredthousands of motorcycle riders riding to South Dakota, concentrated in the area from Rapid City to Spearfish, including the tourist towns of Deadwood, Lead and most of the Black Hills tourist destinations. The Thunderbike team has travelled to the Black Hills several times, in particular 2006 and 2008 after winning the European Championship at the Custom Chrome Europe Dealer Show 2006 with „Spectacula“ and 2008 with „Open Mind“. In 2012, Thunderbikes „Paintless“ won the prestigious title of „World Champion“ at the Sturgis-held Championship – and all all visits, the team enjoyed the great variety of events, attractions and landscapes in the Black Hills from Rapid City to Spearfish. Again in 2025, four major „hot spots“ will attract the attention of visiting riders: The Buffalo Chip Campground, Black Hills Harley-Davidson just outside Rapid City, the Western town of Deadwood and – naturally – Sturgis itself, where „Mainstreet“ is just one of many attractions.
Approaching downtown Sturgis/SD. In Rally times, you can add one or two „0“ to the population number!
Great „Hillbilly Customs“ are always to be expected on Mainstreet. Like this „Mowasaki“ custom styled like a lawnmower!
As everybody who has travelled Sturgis before can remember: It‘s not all sunshine in and around the Black Hills. The softly rolling Hills make you forget that you are in reality in the mountainside: At Harney Peak, the mountains rise to 7.424 feet (2.263), the elevation of Sturgis itself is a stunning 3.422 feet (1.043 meters). As high as most Ski resorts in the European alps. So fast and violent weather changes are to be expected. When a day starts with moderate temperatures and no rain at all, usual late afternoon/early evening thunderstorms can arrive anytime – and can be seen developing over the Black Hills. Drizzling rain and hailballs of up to 3 Inch diameter can hammer onto bikes, tents and the unfortunate riders that were caught in the open! With winds blowing from 60 to 70 mph! It always pays to watch the sky over the Black Hills – and head for cover or escape as early as possible.
STURGIS: Buffalo Chip – Action around the clock!
“It certainly wasn’t business as usual when nearly 500,000 bikers from all over the U.S. rolled into South Dakota in the summer of 2020 to celebrate more than just the legendary event’s 80th anniversary: Sturgis was the biggest motorcycle gathering of the year by far and – at the Buffalo Chip Campground – probably also the biggest open-air music festival of 2020. Worldwide. And this happened in the first and worst year of Covid! 2025 may even see a bigger event, both in Sturgis and at the Buffalo Chip Campground. The Buffalo Chip activities are divided into the Campground & concert activities which can be booked as a packet or as single concerts PLUS the „Free off Charge“ Buffalo Chip „Crossroads“ action that features Bikeshows, Stunt Action and Industry displays outside the fenced-off concert theater.
In 2025, The Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s Custom Series will introduce the largest series of bike shows in the world, featuring 12 unique bike shows – including the legendary „Rats Hole Chopper Custom Show“ on Thursday, August 7th – plus the dedicated motorcycle exhibit „Motorcycles As Art“ which is open all week in a purpose-built building outside the Campground. Plus a number of extraordinary Stuntshows that will rock the crown with spectacular performances! This years „Anniversary“ concert line-up at the Chip includes ZZ Top, Gene Simmons Band (Ex-KISS), Buckcherry, Nickleback, Marilyn Manson, Stone Temple Pilots and many more! All informations are communicated at www.buffalochip.com and www.buffalochip.com/events/crossroads-events/. And be aware: At the time of top concerts, the main route from Sturgis to Buffalo Chip is literally „packed“ with visitors!
With the Crossroads Locations located outside the camping and concert area, the Buffalo Chip also attracts other visitors. Here the famous “Seattle Cossack” show their unique motorcycle acrobatics, performed on antique Harley-Davidsons.
Approaching the Buffalo Chip when “in Action” is an awesome sight! Located dead-bang at the junction of US-79 (to Reva) and US-34 (to Pierre), the massive campground is not to be missed, as here during the 75th anniversary in 2015!
Buffalo and huge Flag mark the entrance – and Sturgis “insiders” can see already that something “wet” is approaching from the Black Hills! Better look for cover now!
STURGIS: Riding the Black Hills
It is a great ride, but additional to thousands of motorcycles, there are also tourists „on the road“ all over the Black Hills destinations! It helps to look at a map and its elevation scales that anywhere in South Dakota you are exposed to “alpine” like climate conditions! Due to the base height of the mid-western plateau, even the “plains” of South Dakota are almost 1.000 meter above sea level. Which is easily forgotten when riding in sunshine and 30+ °C, riding allowed without helmets and no need for heavy leather jackets.
But even in August, thunderstorms, rain, excessive hailstorms and more can come anytime! Having experienced all that, the author can only underline the necessity to have raingear available at all touring – and at least an idea where to hide, if a thunderstorm is approaching! Massive hailstorms and even landslides have caused damage to parked bikes during the Rally too, but these events are rare. emergency stops to concerts however have and will happen!
Gerd Scheidel passing through the first of three tunnels drilled through the rock for the winding “pigtail” road into the Black Hills. All tunnels are aligned with the memorial, but its the first that has the best and most photogenic position.
Mount Rushmore is also an “early starter” destination, as the sun shines mainly in the morning on the skulls of the four presidents. It’s also a good idea to be first at the visitors center, as the site crowds up at noon and particular the afternoon.
A huge network of standard and narrow gauge railroads stretched through the Black Hills, the last island being the “Black Hills Central Railroad” which maintains a rail line from Keystone to Hill City.
STURGIS: The wilderness of the „Badlands“
The Badlands of South Dakota are another beautiful wilderness that defies describing it in words. It’s a “must see” part of every Sturgis visit, much closer than Devil’s Tower, but as unique in its setting and experience! The Author usually spends at least one night at one of the overpriced, but superbly located Motels near Cedar Pass, allowing quick access to the loop road at sunset/sunrise.
Especially in the morning and evening hours, the Badlands present an extraordinary variety of colors, shadows, lights and great open skies!
Sunset on the upper part of the Badlands Loop Road. Cloud formations will light up „ignited“ by the setting sun!
The Badlands Loop is the essential trip to ride when visiting the Badlands National Park in South Dakota.
Wall, while having more attractions is too far away from the park entrance and also has the “light pollution” that makes you miss the spectacular night sky over the Badlands that is part of the breathtaking experience. There are also gravel roads in and out of the park – and Scenic is definitely a town to see – but if you want to ride the Badlands for a quick visit, use the loop road. You will find yourself stopping very often at the spectacular chosen outlooks and always bear in mind: This is where the Indians hunted the Buffalo by simply running them over the cliffs! Don’t miss this landscape!
Rattlesnake crossing! Rattlesnakes can be seen and are to be experienced anytime, especially when relaxing on the warm asphalt! They are FAST and can jump at you from a very great distance in no time at all!
Almost like a Western Movie: The sign of the “Longhorn Saloon” is less inviting as the Saloon in the middle of nowhere is: For bikers crossing the wastelands outside the Park Loop a must see!
STURGIS: Devils Tower and the Hulett Run
Two facts for every Sturgis visitor to remember and act on: Wednesday and Hulett/Wyoming! A tiny Wyoming town, barely 10 miles from Devil’s Tower, population +/- 400 is THE destination for tens of thousands of bikers on Wednesday of the Sturgis Rally. Wyoming is a bit more relaxed than South Dakota in its laws, which is why there’s a “whiff” of Old Sturgis wandering the streets here. They did call it “Pig Roast”, now „Ham ‚n‘ Jam“ – but it is more! Also in the form of rubber going up in smoke! Best to get an early start and plan on spending the whole day! Devils Tower at sunset is a dream. Any time spent here is just great: Lava rock formations can be found elsewhere, but not in this awesome beauty! And at night, you’ll have many a “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”.
The core of a volcano, exposed by the waters of the Belle Fourche River, makes a spectacular view from each angle and distance! Coming back after the Rally with more time is highly recommended! So is a walk around the volcano core! No picture come anywhere near the original size of this massive piece of Rock. There is a great Museum/Info Shop with superb literature – and before you visit, watch iconic Spielberg’s movie! The least you can calculate is a 2 hour visit to get up and anywhere near the rock to see its massive structure! No surprise Indians had a lot of legends around the origin of this volcano core!
One IMPORTANT tip: no matter how full your motorcycle fuel tank is: FUEL UP at Sundance before riding on to Devils Tower and Hulett!
THE super tour – and at the same time an event in the event: Devils Tower in Wyoming is always worth a visit. AND the hike around it too!
Waiting for UFO‘s? “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” of 1977 did highlight Devils Tower as one of THE top tourist attractions in Wyoming!
Famous even in Indian times, Devils Tower was a mystery rock formation to the Indians and holy ground.
STURGIS: Wild West in Deadwood and beyond…
With its Saloons, mainstreet and numerous hotel in and around the city, Deadwood has become as crowded as Sturgis itself – and is a destination of several „Charity Rides“ from Sturgis to Deadwood. The town was founded in the Gold Rush years following 1874 and completely ignored all treaties with the Indians made before. Result of the gold rush, settlements sprang up all over the Black Hills at the prospecting sites, Deadwood one of the most infamous and legendary. Todays railroad line through SD and Sturgis is insignificant and serves freight traffic only, if anybody stops at all. The extensive railroad network of the gold rush era is gone, only „islands“ can be seen today. Deadwood has become a „Wild West Disneyland“ – and especially during the Rally days, the town is fully packed with bikers.
„Full House“ at the Deadwood „Legends Ride“ arriving from Sturgis. Parking options even for motorcycles are somewhat exhausted and the ride is occupying several streets for a few hours.
Motorcycle parking extending into the street in direction of Lead, the mining town in the Black Hills.
The girls are getting older through the years, but there are always some nice ones entering the scene!
Traces of the Wild West can be found everywhere in the Black Hills: A number of newly built forts were built to protect the settlers against Indian attacks, including Fort Meade, which was initially located closer to Bear Butte to keep the Indians under closer observation: The mountain – like so many peaks in and around the Black Hills – still is sacred to the Indians. The foundation stones for today‘s „Fort“ were laid in August 1878 – and anyone who is in Sturgis should pay a visit. Important for true US patriots: this is the place where „The Star Spangled Banner“ was written, now the American National Anthem!
STURGIS: Motorsport all week!
The history of the Sturgis Rally and Races can‘t be told without the term „Races“. Racing always played an important part in the Rally calendar – and there is still plenty of racing action around during the Rally days: Dragracing at the 1/8 Mile Sturgis Dragway, Hillclimbing organized by the Buffalo Chip Campground or the Jackpine Gypsies and Dirt Track Racing at numerous tracks in Sturgis itself or Rapid City. For a complete list of events (which might not complete at all, because the rally often ignores „outside“ events)
View on the Buffalo Chip „Hillclimb“ race location. Spectacular race action next to the top music and eventsite just outside Sturgis.
Unique in Hillclimbing, the Buffalo Chip track allows „Uphill Dragracing“ with two Hillclimbers running side-by-side! Which is challenging for both riders and security personal!
Especially when competitors arrive head-to-head at the top, the dragstyle hilllclimbs become spectacular!
STURGIS: Thunderbike on the road!
The THUNDERBIKE team did visit the Sturgis Rally several times, competing at the „World Championship“ with spectacular motorcycles! While the team had to settle for second place with the Spectacula in 2006, they won the World Championship in Sturgis in 2012 with the Painttless. Check out the superb Thunderbike top-custombikes
