Motorcycle Mirrors
The selection of accessories mirrors is huge and not always designed for the EU market. This leads many bikers to ask whether this mirror is legal to use or whether there might be problems with the next inspection. In general shapes with increased risk of injury are not allowed.
First of all, the important data for all current motorcycles (approval according to EEC from about 2000, at the latest from June 2013):
- The e-test mark is practically mandatory – however, many law enforcement officials rom about it when the mirror looks like it stick to the regulations. In the case of doubt threatens (conditions 2019) a fine of 15€ (penalty table to 56§ StVZO)
- the mirror surface must be 69 cm² – if the shape exceeds a round mirror, it will be difficult for the law enforcement officers to measure it at a traffic check. More helpful are the specifications that a circular template of 78mm must fit into all non-round mirrors. With the round mirror it is 94 mm, with which all 4″ mirrors from the US accessory fit in the size.
- But the mirror shouldn’t be bigger than 15 cm either but that should not be a problem.
- The next condition is a convex mirror glass (with curvature), adjustability and a maximum angle of 55° between mirror and eye. This should of course prevent the mirror from being out of sight.
If you drive an older vehicle with StVZO approval, an area of 60cm² is sufficient. A mirror became generally only starting from 1961 the obligation and 1990 followed the second mirror. Also the good old StVZO had no problems with flat mirrors, which only have a smooth surface. In addition, the mirror or mirrors must be fixed at a minimum distance of 28 cm from the centre of the vehicle – it would be a mystery anyway how they should otherwise allow a view to the rear. At that time there were no test marks.
Conclusion:
You have the free choice what you mount on your bike. Old original mirrors should never be thrown away, because who knows for what they are still needed. Of course, we do not recommend mirrors that are too small, because a good view is essential.
We have divided the mirrors into 3 categories. Some Harley-Davidson mirrors are not available in europe. Mirrors from aftermarket-categorie of Custom Chrome and Thunderbike mirrors from our catalog can contain show-only mirrors. Street legal mirrors are marked with a small icon.
